Welcome!
DUAL ENROLLMENT WITH HILL COLLEGE INFORMATION
Any student who still needs to register for their dual credit courses, must do so by Friday, September 3rd at the Cleburne campus for Hill College. They are open until 4:30 each day, except for Friday, only until 4:00. They will need to go to the Administration building and see the office of Dual Enrollment.
They still need to request that a copy of their transcript and TAKS scores be faxed to Hill in the registrar's office. If they have never dual enrolled before with Hill (or the last time enrolled was fall 2009), they will need to pick up an Early Admission/Dual Enrollment application from their counselor (they can also find a copy on BHS Counseling Center website). New students must also fill out the online application at www.hillcollege.edu.
Any additional questions should go through the students house counselor or email Denise Stewart at dstewart@hillcollege.edu.
Attention Parents and Students of Juniors or Seniors: Representatives from Hill College will be on campus this Friday, August 27th from 9-12 and 1:30-4:30 to help with dual enrollment registration and take payments. If you have not already registered over the summer, please go by the registrar's office to sign up for a copy of your TAKS scores and transcript to be sent to Hill. This must be done by Wednesday, August 25th at 4:30. Hill can only register those students who have turned in their paperwork by Wednesday. If you have never enrolled with Hill, please print off the following form Dual Credit Early Admission Application.pdf and fill out their online application at www.hillcollege.edu. Parent signature is required on the form. Please remember to bring payment with you on Friday for tuition. Tuition information can be found on Hill College's website at www.hillcollege.edu. Just a reminder....Burleson residents do pay "out of district" tuition.
As the counselors are setting up their new offices in the high school, the easiest way to contact them for the first week will be via email or phone. We have posted below the breakdown of who the counselors will see this year at BHS. We thank you for your patience as we get ready to serve your student this school year.

Rigorous course opportunities to expand in district
For the past several years, students who participated in the Advanced Placement program were taught in the same classes as students who were enrolled in college credit courses. A transition is underway to better meet the needs of BISD students who wish to score a three or higher on Advanced Placement examinations and continue to meet the needs of students enrolled in dual credit.
Beginning with the Freshmen Class of 2009-2010, Burleson High School and Centennial High School will provide Advanced Placement* classes separate from dual credit courses. Dual credit courses through Hill College will continue to be offered and taught by Hill College teachers but will not calculate in overall grade point average (GPA). In addition to Hill College credit, BISD students who meet the eligibility criteria will be provided the opportunity to earn online college credit during the school day through the University of Texas at Arlington and / or Lamar University. The cost for the online opportunity will be free for students who take two courses or less per year.
It is hoped that dual credit opportunities will be expanded for students who do not participate in a particular Advanced Placement course. A focus group made up of BHS graduates, counselors, teachers, parents, administrators and a BISD School Board representative will convene in June to determine how a model dual credit program can be provided to students in BISD in a way that provides a smooth transition from high school to post-secondary education. We will continue to update the Burleson community on the BHS Counseling website.
*AP and the Cost of College:
The College Board states the following: "Most students take five or six years, and sometimes even longer, to earn their bachelor's degrees at public colleges and universities. Students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely to graduate in four years. ...A study in 2008 found that AP students had better four-year graduation rates than those who did not take AP. For example graduation rates for AP English Literature students were 62% higher than graduation rates for those who took other English courses in high school. Thirty-one percent of college and universities consider a student's AP experience when making decisions about which students will receive scholarship. Eighty-five percent of selective college and universities report that a student's AP experience favorable impacts admissions decisions."

Breaking News for On-line Registration!
A few notes you need to know:
1. You must use student logins and passwords to select classes in Family Access. Parent logins/passwords will not work for scheduling.
2. Do not hit "submit" unless you are finished and satisfied with your schedule. If you would like to work on your schedule (add/drop classes) later, you need to only hit "logout" at the top of your screen. Once you hit "submit" it will lock you out of your scheduling options.
3. If your student does not know his/her login/password, they need to come by the counseling office and see Ms. Cannaday. The office is open from 8:00-4:15.
4. The school has added 3 new sections of Pre-calculus in periods 1, 4 and 7.

Recently, the Texas Legislature made some important changes to High School graduation plans (primarily, the recommended graduation plan) which will be implemented starting with the 2009-2010 school year. The following two documents will explain the changes, give links to other information, and explain how BHS will respond to the changes.
