I am very excited about being the Frazier counselor this year. I will be going into each classroom about once every six weeks to teach a guidance lesson. I will be presenting lessons on how to make and keep friends, safety issues, how to have good self-esteem, study skills and goal setting, bullying issues, and career exploration. Fire Prevention Month is October and the Burleson Fire Department will be here to teach about fire safety and to give the children a tour of the fire trucks. We are also going to be talking about the six pillars of character this year, one for each six weeks. I am looking forward to a great year!
The first character word, for the first six weeks, is trustworthiness. As I go into each classroom, I explain to the students that trustworthiness means being someone that other people can count on to do the right thing. Good people are people you can trust. They are honest; they tell the truth. They are brave enough to do good things, even when people want them to do bad things. They keep promises; if they say they will do something, they do it. They say and do good things for their families and friends; they are loyal. Good people do the right thing, even when doing or saying the right thing gets them into trouble or causes them to lose friends, opportunities or money. I encourage all of the students at Frazier to be trustworthy.
The character word for the second six weeks is respect. Good people show respect of others, and show it by recognizing and honoring everyone's right to be an individual, to make decisions, to have some privacy and to feel proud. Respectful people give others the information they need to make good decisions about their lives. Respectful people treat others nicely. They treat others with consideration and courtesy. They don't bully anyone or hurt anyone.
The character word for the third six weeks is responsibility. Responsibility means doing your part. Responsibility is one of the things that show a person has good character. Good people have good charactoer. Good people help out and do their part. You do your part when you help your family, friends, and teachers. That's responsibility. You do your part when you do good things. Sometimes it's easier to do wrong things, but doing your part means doing the right thing even when the right thing is the hard thing to do. That's responsibility. You do your part when you think before you say anything or do anything. That's responsibility. You do your part when you try your hardest and do you best in thing you do. That's responsibility.
The character word for the fourth six weeks is fairness. Fairness means going by the rules. It's treating everyone the same. It's giving everyone the same chance to play. It's using the same rules for everyone. People who are fair listen to others and try to understand what they are feeling and saying. Fair people consider all the facts before making a decision. Being fair means not taking advantage of other people's mistakes and not taking more than your fair share. People who are fair do not let personal preferences, prejudices, or other feelings get in the way of decisions that should be based on how well a person does. Let's all try to be fair in every situation.
The character word for the fifth six weeks is caring. Caring people are kind and compassionate. They express their gratitude to others and they forgive others. People who are caring are quick to help other people who are in need. Caring people watch out for people, pets, buildings, plants, and even their neighborhoods. Caring is at the heart of a good person's character. A caring person is helpful, kind and giving. A caring person always thinks how words and actions will make other people feel.
The character word for the sixth six weeks is citizenship. Good citizens obey rules and laws. People who are good citizens are good neighbors and are helpful to other people in their community. They cooperate with others and help to protect the environment. They do their share to help make their school and community a better place for everyone.
